An influx of hound dogs has a Virginia animal shelter searching for more adopters.
Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue is a non-profit animal rescue organization run entirely by volunteers. They take in dogs of every size and breed in hopes of finding them new homes, but this time of year always goes to the hounds.
January coincides with the end of hunting season, and that has mixed results for the area's canines. While most hunters value their dogs like family, that isn't always the case. Some hunting dogs end up at the shelter when they're no longer needed, and Hickory Hill does their best to make room.
Currently, there are at least 12 hound dogs waiting at the shelter for new homes. Hickory Hill K-9 Rescue posted on Facebook:
"There is no way the county can save them all without the help of rescues and adopters. Hounds make wonderful, loyal, loving pets!"
There's Archie, a four-year-old male hound dog with an infectious smile, and Chloe, an active two-year-old with floppy ears and soulful eyes. The shelter describes the majority of their adoptable hounds as young adult dogs and offers adopters assistance with spaying and neutering costs.

Some of the dogs were trained for the hunt, and shelter volunteers are looking for families capable of providing the best homes for the working dogs.
Whether they're used to chasing fowl through the thicket or the neighbor's cat under the fence, hound dogs are active animals that require regular exercise and stimulation to stay happy. They like to run and chase, and they'd be perfect for families who enjoy the outdoors.
