A new indie game, Wrench, immerses gamers into hardcore mechanics to troubleshoot and assemble virtual cars.
Developed by 3D and video game artist Alec Moody, the game takes place in a small garage, using the Oculus Rift and HTC Vie virtual reality headsets to take gamers to task swapping out entire engines, tightening nuts, and working with other auto parts.
In order to produce the game, Moody had to 3D scan hundreds of parts to render it accurately to scale, along with the painstaking process of modeling some tools or parts by hand-drawing. In the trailer above, all tools are true to scale with a floating hand gripping and torquing each piece in a stunning display of realism.
"Building game systems like this involved a lot of learning and stubbornly working through problems that seem impossible", said Moody in an interview. "Learning something new can be a slog, after you solve a problem it often times seems obvious and trivial. It is very rewarding."
