Volvo Trucks' first production model is the FL, an all-electric heavy truck with a 185kW electric motor and a 186-mile range.
It is the progeny of the Off-Peak City Distribution Project, a research venture on late-night goods transport in downtown Stockholm, Sweden which studied distribution methods in the quietest manner possible.
Now, Volvo announced that the first two FL trucks would be operated by recycling company Renova and transportation company TGM.
Designed with distribution, recycling, and waste management in mind, the FL is a 16-ton truck that can fill many needs in urban environments. Its batteries can be charged from empty in under 2 hours on DC power and 10 hours on AC power, making it an ideal candidate for quick-turnaround fleet operations.
"We're immensely proud to present the first in a range of fully electrically-powered Volvo trucks ready for regular traffic," said Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks. "With this model, we are making it possible for cities that aim for sustainable urban development to benefit from the advantages of electrified truck transports."
Production and sales are set to begin in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
