This Kia proves its ready for a fight.
The new Kia Stinger GT is making a big name for itself. It's powered by a surprisingly peppy twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 worth 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque sent to the rear tires. Saddled with roughly 4,000 pounds to move, the Stinger GT will hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, aided in part by a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic.
But how's it stack up against an iconic pony car? Motoring Australia pitted the four-door Kia against the venerable Ford Mustang GT. Unlike the high-strung V-6 in the Kia, the Ford uses a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 making 435 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque - all backed by a proper V-8 growl. As all Mustangs are, this GT is rear-wheel drive.
The Mustang GT laid down a respectable 13.32-second run through the quarter-mile at 107 mph. That's not bad considering the Mustang is fitted with a six-speed manual transmission and Motoring decided not to use launch control.
The Kia Stinger GT, on the other hand, blasted its way down the quarter-mile in only 12.83 seconds, and with a trap speed of 107mph. That means the Kia Stinger sedan outran the Mustang GT by a half-second - impressive.
Of course, Ford might argue for a re-match with the latest version of the 'Stang. Remember, the Mustang GT's 5.0-liter received a healthy power bump for 2018, pushing its specs to 460 horses and 420 pound-feet. The Kia might have met its match. In reality, the Stinger is more family-friendly thanks to its room for five and more trunk space. Then again, those wanting an unfair fight can always graduate from the Mustang GT to the Shelby GT350 and its 526-horsepower 5.2-liter V-8.
Either way, it's a great time in automotive history.
