What exactly do they mean by "Kill the Tomato"?

Aiming for a large inflatable target in the sea, the U.S. Navy has a "Kill the Tomato" party. Check out this short video as see just how many bullets this "tomato" can take.

Can you believe the "tomato" didn't sink at all? That inflatable floating target was able to handle all kinds of gunfire and remain above water for the whole video. These "tomatoes" must be made of some kind of strong material that is somewhat impervious to gunfire.

This video was filmed, "aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5)," in case you're wondering. As you just saw this crew and this ship are ready to handle anything, especially over-sized floating tomatoes. For your next gun shooting outing, maybe something big and red would be a great target.
