Waymo Giving Walmart.com Shoppers Self-Drives in Arizona

Waymo and Walmart entered into a partnership to provide Walmart.com shoppers with rides in Waymo's self-driving vehicles.

Part of a new pilot program, a select group of Walmart customers placing orders on Walmart.com will be picked up from their homes and driven to their local Walmart.

At the moment, participation is only limited to a select group of Walmart.com shoppers belonging to Waymo's 400-participant Early Rider program in the Phoenix suburbs.

"The purpose of all of this: to learn," wrote Tom Ward, VP of e-commerce operations at Walmart, in a blog post. "While giving customers a unique experience with amazing technology, we're learning how we can make Walmart online grocery pickup even more convenient."

This partnership mimics Waymo's smaller deals with Autonation and Avis, which also shuttles customers to one of its dealerships and in the area.

Recently, Waymo also purchased approximately 62,000 minivans from Fiat Chrysler and 20,000 cars from Jaguar Land Rover to expand its ride-hailing network.
