With ample car museum, long long long stretches of beach highways, and professional racing events running at a constant clip, Florida is a playground for car enthusiasts. Here are a few things to check out when traveling through Florida this summer.
Browse a Car Museum or Five
Florida is home to a plethora of car museums, each one housing their own individual styles. In Tallahassee, you can check out a collection of about 80 vehicles, from a 1894 Duryea 2-cylinder prototype to a 1962 Amphicar to a 2001 Plymouth Prowler. At Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda, muscle car enthusiasts can salivate over more than 200 vintage cars ranging from the 1950s to the early 1970s, like GM Performance Cars and hot rods.
Coke Zero Sugar 400 in Daytona
If you love going fast, and don't mind melting and simmering in the swampy heat, stop by the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Taking place on July 7, this NASCAR rally features 160 laps of insanely fast drivers putting their technical driving skills to work. Pack your RV with endless amounts of water and sunscreen and you should be fine.
Go Island Hopping in the Florida Keys
This has to be on everyone's bucket list. It's awesome to think that you can get in your car and go from one tiny island to another by way of looooooooooooong stretches of highway that eek out into the crystal clear water. Jimmy Buffet ultra fans, or people who really like margaritas, can head to Key West. And fans of Ernest Heimgway can also partake in a boozy road trip to the island where the historic and extremely efficient American writer liked to spend his days with his cats.
Stroll by and See Classic Cars on Miami Beach
Really like old cars? Miami is like the Holy Grail for you then. Short of heading to Havana, Miami Beach and its landmark locations like the Avalon Hotel are great places to spot wonderful and well-maintained vintage cars.
